PTSD is Post-traumatic stress disorder and is a condition affecting mental health. It’s caused by trauma. Trauma can be intense and something you experienced, it may be something you saw or it may be something you’ve blocked out from your past.
Symptoms of PTSD include anxiety, flashbacks, thoughts that are difficult to control and inability to sleep due to nightmares.
PTSD symptoms are generally grouped into four types:
- Intrusive memories, which includes reliving memories and recurring dreams
- Avoidance, which includes avoiding places or people that are related to the event or which trigger you,
- Changes in thinking and mood, which includes feeling detached, depression, lack of interest in activities that you were happy or comfortable doing in the past
- Changes in physical and emotional reactions such as difficulty focusing on day to day tasks, angry outbursts, extreme guilt, trouble sleeping, destructive behavior including drinking and drug addiction
